Our next concert, once again, looks to be both interesting and exciting. We sing Handel's Dixit Dominus, an explosive statement of intent by the 22-year-old composer then living and working in Italy. His contemporary Jan Dismas Zelenka is one of the great rediscoveries of the past fifty years, a composer of outstanding talent, famous in his day but almost entirely neglected since then. We will be singing one of his settings of the Miserere, a tantalising example of his original and individual voice, described in his lifetime as the product of his “profound art and rare knowledge”. It sounds as though attendance at Nicholas O'Neill's pre-concert talk will feel almost obligatory! |
